Psychological testing

Dallas Therapeutic Services is pleased to provide high-quality psychological testing services. Psychological testing is a method of gathering and analyzing individualized data to better understand an individual’s personality, including diagnostic criteria and how the brain functions across various tasks like attention and problem-solving. DTS currently offers the following testing services:

  • Autism Testing

  • Diagnostic Testing

  • IQ Testing

  • Cognitive and Learning Testing

Testing typically involves meeting with one of our trained clinicians for an in-depth interview and completion of assessments. Once all of the data is analyzed, you may meet with the clinician again to review your results, discuss how to use this information to guide the next steps in your treatment, and receive referrals for further care if needed.

Learn more about each test type below.

  • For Autism testing at DTS, we use two clinicians. One clinician acts as an observer, and the second clinician acts as a test administrator. This ensures that two clinicians have confirmed diagnostic results. Autism testing takes roughly 4 hours.

We administer the ADOS-2 and the ADI-R. The ADOS-2 is a thorough evaluation that helps inform a diagnostic determination and is considered the gold standard of autism assessment. The ADOS-2 consists of a series of social interactions and other activities designed to detect the presence of autism spectrum disorder.

The ADI-R is an in-depth interview questionnaire. If the client is a minor, the ADI-R may be completed with the client’s parent or guardian.

  • IQ testing is completed in the office. One of our trained clinicians meets with you to administer a series of tests measuring four specific domains of intelligence: verbal comprehension, perceptual reasoning, working memory, and processing speed. An overall IQ score is also provided. IQ testing takes about 2 hours.

  • Diagnostic testing consists of an in-depth clinical interview and a series of computer and paper-based assessments. These measures assess for many possible indicators of psychopathology and mental health symptomology, including attention deficits like those seen in ADHD, personality functioning, anxiety and mood disorders, and more. Test results can also guide treatment planning.

After analyzing the testing data and compiling a thorough report, one of our trained clinicians will meet with you to review the results. Our clinicians may also coordinate with your other providers to explain testing results and their implications for treatment.

Obtaining an accurate diagnosis can be life-changing for some people. Through our testing and coordination with you and your support system, we hope to help you better understand the diagnostic roots of your current difficulties.

  • The primary goal of cognitive and learning disorders psychological testing is to diagnose learning disabilities, which are neurologically-based processing problems that can interfere with learning basic skills such as reading, writing, or math. Additionally, these tests can help identify underlying cognitive and psychological issues that may contribute to learning difficulties.

    Components:

    1. Clinical Interview:

      • History Taking: Gathering detailed background information about the individual's developmental, educational, medical, and family history.

      • Current Concerns: Understanding the specific learning challenges and concerns from the perspective of the individual, parents, and teachers.

    2. Standardized Testing:

      • Cognitive Assessments

      • Academic Achievement Tests

      • Processing Skills

      • IQ Testing

    3. Behavioral and Emotional Assessments

    4. Observations and Informal Assessments

  • For clients not utilizing insurance and paying out-of-pocket, our testing rates are as follows:

    - Autism testing - $2000

    - Diagnostic testing - $1750

    - IQ testing - $1000

    -Cognitive and Learning - $1500

We are unfortunately limited to providing each client utilizing insurance with only one form of psychological testing per policy year. This restriction typically applies to autism evaluations and diagnostic testing. In most instances, we can also conduct IQ testing and cognitive/learning disorder evaluations on a private pay basis in the same policy year. We understand the inconvenience this may cause, and we appreciate your understanding as we navigate these restrictions to ensure the best care for our clients.

We do not accept insurance for IQ testing. Because IQ testing alone is typically not associated with a specific medical or psychological diagnosis, it often does not meet medical necessity criteria for reimbursement required by most insurance providers. While IQ testing can provide valuable insights into cognitive abilities, it is generally considered an elective service.

For cognitive and learning disorders testing, we accept only Aetna, Cigna, and private pay. This testing is often not covered by insurance. We will check benefit eligibility, but coverage is not expected or guaranteed, in which case the client is financially responsible.

*These are our standard base rates. Costs may vary based on the duration of testing (e.g. if standard time must be increased significantly) and/or add-on services (e.g. if additional assessments are required.) Insurance may not cover IQ or Cognitive/Learning Testing, nor may they cover all forms of Diagnostic Testing dependent on your policy.
